Church School

"Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long. "
Psalm 25:4-5

Church school is held on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., September 16 through early June. Children 2 years old through 6th grade study in classes broken out by age group. Junior high youth and Senior high youth have separate classes and advanced curriculum. Adults participate in 6- to 12-week courses.

Adult Classes

Children 2-years old through Kindergarteners study in classes broken out by age group. This year our children will encounter Old Testament Bible stories this fall through activities carefully tailored to the abilities and interests of their age groups. As they hear and learn the stories of creation, Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Jacob, Joseph, and Moses and the 10 commandments, the children will be invited to connect the story with their own life experiences. Our Church school activities touch the head, the heart, the hands, and the imagination. Listen for the laughter and singing in the children's classrooms. We make murals and posters, books and collages, banners and get well cards. We read stories. We act out stories. We listen to the children read. We listen to the children. And we dish out lots of love. Two-year olds through Kindergarteners meet in Room 257.

Our Great Explorations program for 1st through 5th graders launches its third year using the workshop rotation model. "Family Feud: Jealousy Between Brothers," our first unit, moves through the story of Jacob and Esau. As they learn the story of this biblical family’s conflict through drama, art, games, videos, and the computer, the children will also discover insights about how God wants us to live our lives today. Join your group in the Senior High Room (Room 22) at 10:00 am. Parents may meet their children by the "hot air balloon" on the lower level after Church school.

Junior High – "Road Trip" - The Jr. Highs will take a whirlwind tour of the most exciting spots in the Bible. Drama, travel, games and activities, and cool music are all apart of this year’s adventure. All 6th-8th graders are invited to explore these biblical "road stories"! Junior Highs meet in Room 124.

Senior High – "Destination Unknown-Mystery Trips" - Open your eyes…open your ears…open your hearts…encounter God! 9th-12th graders are invited to experience God in mysterious ways! Join us as we let go of our busyness, center ourselves on God and reach out to others. Senior Highs meet in Room 229.

Growing grown-ups can attend Church School too! Our short course studies for adults offer three different classes each Sunday. These classes focus on Bible study, Christian living, or social action and are led by staff and lay members of the congregation.

TNT–Twenties and Thirties - The TNT group continues to look at the interesting and sometimes troublesome Bible passages! The first Sunday of the month is designated as "TNT Game Time"—Bible Pictionary, Bible Charades, and other games are used to explore the Bible and its great themes. And of course, every Sunday there is food! Facilitators: Bill Wall and Carrie Yearick. Our class meets in Room 110.

"Studying and Interpreting Scripture" - As we learn about and discuss the history and principles of biblical interpretation, we will examine various scripture passages relating to issues where there have been strong differences of opinion in the church. Issue topics include slavery, the role of women in the church, and divorce. In this six-week course we will look at the various authorities that color and control our response to the Christian faith, such as Scripture, creeds, church tradition and history, reason, and the Holy Spirit. All of this is designed to help us interpret scripture in times of controversy. Texts for the course are the Bible and Reading the Bible & the Confessions: The Presbyterian Way by Jack Rogers (currently moderator of our General Assembly). Join facilitator: Ed Gross. Class meets in Room 234.

"Introduction to Islam" - September 11th and the subsequent war in Afghanistan have captured our attention with an intensity not felt since the Gulf War of 10 years ago. We hear again the cry of "jihad" or "holy war" from those who wish us harm. Reluctantly, we face once more opponents whose religious faith we barely understand but whose followers willingly sacrifice themselves to further their cause. This six-week course will offer an opportunity through lecture, discussion, and video for increasing our knowledge of Islam, including its theology, history, and culture. Join facilitator: Fred Lokay in the Multipurpose Room.

"Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace" - This six-week course focuses on the life and work of this 20th Century German theologian and scholar, who was an influential figure in the Confessing Church (a reform movement within Lutheranism), and a leading member of the German resistance movement during the Third Reich. The award-winning film, Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace, and related materials will provide a foundation for class discussions. Discussion topics will include the relevance of Bonhoeffer’s Christian witness for us today. Meet with facilator Esther Elstun in Room 233.

"Knowing God: Questions About God" -God's people carried questions about their creator, which are mirroed in the Scriptures. They wondered: What is God's true nature? Can we trust God to be loving, fair, and just? How can we know the unknowable God? We wonder, too! Our exploration of these and other questions will take us from Genesis to Revelation as we consider selected passages that throw light on our theme, Knowing God. This is also the title of our supplemental resource book from Kerygma. Class meets for 8 sessions on Wednesdays 7:30 p.m. on January 9 - 30 and February 20 - March 13. Join facilitor Mary Ann Harwell in Room 234

"Basic Bible" - A weekly one-hour class called "Basic Bible" is held on Fridays, 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon in the parlor. No previous Bible study is expected and students are invited to attend as they are able. Dig deeper into the word.... Why not make this class part of your "Back-to-School" routine? Class is led by Henry Brinton

No matter what your age we have a class for you to encounter the biblical story and connect it to your own life with others at Fairfax Church. Please call Please call Mary Ann Harwell at the Church office, (703) 273-5300 for more information.
