Music for Worship on January 13

Anthem (8:45) -- "Give Me Jesus" arr. by L. L. Fleming;

sung by the Sanctuary Choir, 

Dr. Kenneth Martin, director  

"When I am alone ... when I come to die ... [or] when I want to sing, Give Me Jesus."  This is one of a set of three arrangements of black spirituals by L. L. Fleming. 

It is slow and meditative, but uses dramatic changes of dynamics for powerful expressive effect.  

Anthem (11:15) -- "Draw Near, All Ye People" (from Elijah) by Felix Mendelssohn;

sung by Kenneth Martin, bass-baritone  

At the crucial moment in the "Contest on Mount Carmel" in the oratorio Elijah, the prophet calls the people of Israel to him and prays a fervent prayer that they will repent and return to serving God.  

Additional music in both services will be played on our Gress-Miles organ

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Teen Choir Meeting  

There will be a meeting of teens and their parents with Kenneth Martin to discuss the schedule for Teen Choir. 

This conversation will take place this Sunday, January 13, at 10:00 a.m. in the Choir Room (room 235).    

 

Instrumental Ensemble Rehearsals  

The Instrumental Ensemble will rehearse this Sunday, January 13, and next Sunday, January 20, at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall (room 145).

They will be preparing an arrangement of "When the Saints Go Marching In" to be used in the Mission Emphasis Service on February 3.

New Year's Resolution -- Become More Involved in Music at FPC

Make a New Year's Resolution to become more active and involved in the music program at FPC! There are opportunities for every member of the family, from Carol Choir and Chapel Choir for children to the handbell choirs (Joyful Ringers, Radiant Ringers), instrumental ensemble, and choirs for adults and youth. For more information about any of these, see Dr. Martin. If nothing else, resolve to sing the hymns more heartily in 2008 as a member of the congregation!
