ANNOUNCEMENTS
On this day remembering when children waved palm branches to celebrate Christ's entry into Jerusalem, the children of our Carol Choir (Vanessa Mueller and Elizabeth Bowen, Directors) and Chapel Choir (Donna Whited, Director), supported by some members of our Teen Choir (Kenneth Martin, Director) provide much of our worship music. Hosanna Processional captures the festive spirit of that event, while The Liturgy of the Palms narrates the story from the Gospel of Mark in more detail. The Sanctuary Choir sings the best-known choral setting of John 3:16 as our Offertory today.
The music for worship on Easter Sunday at Fairfax Presbyterian Church will be grand and festive, in keeping with the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord. The Sanctuary Choir will present three pieces to enhance our worship that day. The Introit Christ Is Risen, O Be Joyful by Douglas E. Wagner will set a tone of joyous praise for the services. Daniel E. Gawthrop's Bright Easter Morn, the Anthem for the day, narrates how the first disciples came to an awareness of the reality and significance of the Resurrection of Jesus. Fanfare for Easter by Jane M. Marshall, our Offertory, will give Paul's interpretation of the Resurrection from his First Epistle to the Corinthians. The 33-voice Sanctuary Choir is directed by Dr. Kenneth Martin, Acting Director of Music, and accompanied by Dr. Donna Whited, Acting Organist on the church's 1978 Gress-Miles organ. A quintet of professional brass and timpani players will support the choir on the Introit and Offertory and provide other music for the services. Easter services of worship will begin at 8:45 and 11:15 a.m. in the church Sanctuary, with the same music and a sermon by Senior Pastor the Rev. Henry Brinton in each service. Join us on Easter Sunday as we worship the Risen Lord. Alleluia!
Announcing the 2008
Abendmusik
Program at Fairfax Presbyterian Church
The FPC Sanctuary Choir will present selected choruses from Parts II and III of Handel's Messiah in the annual Abendmusik music program on Sunday, April 20, at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Acting Director of Music Dr. Kenneth Martin will conduct the chorus and orchestra, with support on the organ from Acting Organist Dr. Donna Whited.
The program will include the following choruses from the parts of Messiah that we usually do not hear at Christmas time:
Behold the Lamb of God
Surely He Hath Borne Our Griefs
And with His Stripes We Are Healed
All We Like Sheep Have Gone Astray
Lift Up Your Heads, O Ye Gates
The Lord Gave the Word
Hallelujah
Since by Man Came Death
Worthy Is the Lamb (with Amen)
Singers from the congregation or the community who would like to participate in this program may do so in either of two ways:
One is to come Thursday evenings to our regular Sanctuary Choir rehearsals. We will be working on Messiah from 7:30 until 8:15 each evening beginning February 14. You do not have to stay for the remainder of the rehearsal (until 9:30), though you would certainly be welcome as we prepare music for our weekly Sunday worship.
The other is to come to both of our Saturday morning rehearsals, which will be Saturday, April 5, from 9:30 to 12:30 and Saturday, April 19, from 9:00 to 12:00 (this will be a final rehearsal, with orchestra).
We are using the Novello edition of Messiah edited by Watkins Shaw. We have plenty of copies for guest singers, but you are welcome to bring your own if you have one already. This program will be choruses only -- no solos.
